Call it the art of clinching in the rain. NASA Northeast’s 2019 season drew to a close with an exciting weekend at New Jersey Motorsports Park’s Thunderbolt circuit. Saturday’s clear conditions and crisp temperatures led to some great racing and fresh track records. Sunday’s weather took a turn, and racers battled out for every point in blinding rain, dodging puddles large enough to swallow a Miata. In ST2, Mark Petronis arrived hungry to close the gap in points between him, A.J. Hartman, and Doug Winston. The regional championship podium order was to be decided by the final event’s points. Unfortunately for [...]
Matthew Wasilewski was leading the ST4 race at the NASA Championships Presented by Toyo Tires at Mid-Ohio, but an axle failure took him out at the exit of the Carousel. The failure darn near took out Andre Eisenbach, too, but he steered around Wasilewski, made a number of quick course corrections and carried on to take the ST4 Championship. Andre Eisenbach took the ST4 and TT4 Championships at Mid-Ohio, but he had a few bumps along the way, one of which was an ABS failure as he headed into the Keyhole. The safety crews pulled him out of the kitty litter and Team Edge Motorworks got the problem figured out, and Eisenbach went on to take two championships at Mid-Ohio. When it starts raining and the whole field has gone out on dry tires, things can get pretty white-knuckled. In this video from Autobahn Country Club in October, ST5 racer Kyle Burkhardt got punted during the wet start, then worked his way back up to the bumper of Aaron Spiegel about 13:15 minutes in and then got around him when Spiegel had to catch a spin. Burkhardt survived a few more spins on his way to a second-place finish at Autobahn. The post Fickle Weather appeared first on NASA Speed News Magazine.
In the months leading up to the 2019 NASA Championships Presented by Toyo Tires, ST6 driver Nolan Feathers didn’t think he was going to attend. He just couldn’t afford it. That’s when his friends, specifically Rick Young, initiated a GoFundMe campaign to get Feathers the money he needed to register for the Championships. Young started it one morning at 9 a.m., and by noon enough money was collected so Feathers could race at the NASA Championships. There was even money left over, so they threw a party Saturday night at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. When the race began, Feathers was trying [...]
The front four cars in Super Touring 5 were all within sight of one another and battling back and forth all race long. It was as tight as racing gets. Eric Waddell managed to keep Thai Diep and Cagri Yilmaz behind him for the whole race. “Man that was hard work. That was hard work,” Waddell said. “They did not give me one second to rest. Never did I get a nice lead.” For most of the race, Yilmaz and Diep hounded Waddell, who won a championship in 2012 at Mid-Ohio. There was a bit of argy-bargy and Yilmaz dropped back [...]
Matthew Wasilewski looked like the man to beat in ST4 all weekend. He was the fastest of the field. Some suspension damage during the qualifying race knocked him out, then an overheating issue crept in on lap 12 while he was leading the Championships race and knocked him out again. Two laps later a double-yellow brought out the pace car. That put Andre Eisenbach firmly in command of ST4, and he maintained a solid lead over Jeffrey Birdwell. In the end, Eisenbach took the top step on the podium. “Man, what a roller coaster ride,” Eisenbach said. “We had a well [...]
After winning the qualifying race, Eric Magnussen looked like the man to beat in Super Touring 3, but it wasn’t to be. Even the results of the race weren’t to be. A brief explanation is in order. Ross Thompson was trailing Luke Rumburg at the finish of the race, but Rumburg was bumped down one spot due to a procedural violation. That reshuffled the order a bit, putting Thompson in first and Rumburg in second “You know something, it was an awesome, awesome weekend,” Thompson said. “I can’t say enough for Desert Flight Racing. It was a lot traffic, a lot [...]
Terry Mathis already had one championship in NASA, in American Iron from 2015. Now he has two. He had his hands full all weekend with 2017 ST3 and 2018 ST1 Champion Mark Burt and 2017 ST1 Champion Dmitri Goliakov, who jumped out to the early lead. After placing at the top all weekend, Mark Burt didn’t start the race due to mechanical issues. Mathis managed to get in front of Goliakov, hold the lead through a double-yellow and a restart and go on for the big win in ST1. “This probably the best because the last one was a Eastern States [...]
NASA Texas ST2 driver Paul Costas has attended two NASA Championships. His first year was last year, when he won TT3. This year he can add an ST2 Championship trophy to his mantle. Costas started from third place behind Todd Clarke, Michael McAleenan and Chad Gilsinger, both of whom were quick in qualifying. Costas got around all of them, held his position through the caution period and finished first to take the ST2 Championship. “The two cars that were in front of us that we were kind of concerned about, obviously the NSX and the Mustang,” Costas said. “Both are heavier [...]
